About this symbol

The atom symbol draws electrons circling a nucleus, the picture of the atom that Ernest Rutherford and Niels Bohr set out between 1911 and 1913. Physics has since moved on to clouds of probability, but the orbit drawing stayed as the emblem of atomic science and atomic energy.
