About this symbol

The power symbol comes from the international standard IEC 60417, which marks equipment controls. It is usually explained as binary: a line for 1, on, and a circle for 0, off. This broken circle with a line inside is symbol 5009 of that standard, standby.

The power symbols reached Unicode in 2016, in version 9.0, after the British technologist Terence Eden proposed them; his proposal was accepted in February 2015.
