About this symbol

The dentistry symbols come from the way dentists number teeth on charts, devised by the Austrian dentist Adolf Zsigmondy in 1861 and spread by the American Corydon Palmer, after whom it is usually called Palmer notation. A right angle shows which quarter of the mouth a tooth is in, and a number from 1 to 8 inside it shows which tooth, counting back from the middle.
