In Japan a circle means correct or yes. It is called maru, teachers draw it on right answers, and its opposite is a cross ×. Korea uses it the same way, under the name gongpyo.
The habit reached video games: many Japanese PlayStation games confirmed a choice with the ○ button, while their Western releases used ✕.
