About this symbol

The keyboard’s - is really a hyphen-minus, one key doing the jobs of the hyphen, the minus sign and, on typewriters, the dash. Unicode gives the true hyphen ‐ its own character, kept apart from the minus sign −, so typesetting software knows which is which.
