About this symbol

The dagger descends from the obelus, a mark ancient Greek scholars used to flag doubtful lines in the works of Homer. Today it usually marks a second footnote, after the asterisk.

Placed before a name or a year, it means death, as in †1850. Biologists use it to mark a species that has died out.
