About this symbol

Ⅎ, a turned F, was one of three letters the Roman emperor Claudius added to the Latin alphabet in the first century, the digamma inversum, for the consonant sound of v, to tell it apart from the vowel u. It appears in inscriptions from his reign, from 41 to 54, and was dropped after his death.
