About this symbol

The angle brackets ⟨ and ⟩ are the bra and ket of quantum mechanics: Paul Dirac introduced the notation in 1939, splitting the word bracket so that ⟨a| is a bra and |b⟩ a ket. They are separate characters from the less-than and greater-than signs < and >.
