About this symbol

Thomas Harriot’s book Artis Analyticae Praxis, published in 1631 after his death, introduced the signs < and >. John Wallis wrote a version of “or equal to” with a bar above in 1670, and the French mathematician Pierre Bouguer used the forms with two bars underneath, ≦ and ≧, in 1734. The single bar used today came later.
