About this symbol
The Fahrenheit scale is named after Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a physicist and maker of thermometers, who proposed it in 1724. On his scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212.
Unicode keeps ℉ as one character for compatibility with East Asian character sets. In ordinary text the recommended form is the degree sign followed by a capital F, as in 70 °F.
