About this symbol

The Celsius scale is named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, who proposed it in 1742. His original scale ran the other way, with 0 for boiling water and 100 for freezing. Jean-Pierre Christin in Lyon proposed the modern direction in 1743, and the reversed scale soon became the standard one.

Unicode keeps ℃ as one character for compatibility with East Asian character sets. In ordinary text the recommended form is the degree sign followed by a capital C, as in 21 °C.
