About this symbol
Small sigma is the symbol for standard deviation, the usual measure of how spread out a set of numbers is. The British statistician Karl Pearson introduced both the term and the symbol in 1894.
Greek writes σ inside a word and ς at the end of one, as in the word σοφός, wise.
