About this symbol

The Indian rupee sign was designed by D. Udaya Kumar and approved by the Government of India on 15 July 2010, after a public competition. It combines the Devanagari letter ra, र, with the Latin capital R, and the two lines at the top echo the Indian flag.

Unicode added it the same year, in version 6.0.
