About this symbol

The European Commission presented the euro sign on 12 December 1996. In the Commission’s own description it joins the Greek letter epsilon, a nod to the cradle of European civilisation, with the first letter of the word Europe, and the two parallel lines stand for the stability of the euro.

The Commission said the sign was designed by a team of four experts and never published their names. Several people have claimed it since, among them Arthur Eisenmenger, a former chief graphic designer of the European Economic Community, who said he had drawn the idea approximately 25 years before the Commission chose it, and the Belgian designer Alain Billiet is often credited too.

Unicode added the sign in 1998, before the currency existed in people’s pockets. Euro notes and coins went into circulation on 1 January 2002.
