About this symbol
In the braille alphabet, W is the cell with dots 2 4 5 6 raised. Dots are numbered 1, 2, 3 down the left column and 4, 5, 6 down the right.
W breaks the pattern of the alphabet because Louis Braille, who was French, designed the system for French, which in his day had no use for w. The letter was added later, in a cell left over.
