About this symbol

The light shade, Alt+176, is one of three shading characters, ░ ▒ ▓, in the IBM PC’s character set, code page 437. DOS programs used them for the backgrounds of menus and windows, and artists used them for ANSI art, pictures made entirely of text on the bulletin board systems of the 1980s and 1990s.
