About this symbol

Box-drawing characters let early computers draw frames, tables and windows out of plain text. They came from the IBM PC’s built-in character set, code page 437, and DOS programs used them for their menus and borders; ─ is the plain horizontal line, Alt+196. Unicode keeps 128 of them in their own block.
