About this symbol

The p in pH, the scale for how acid or alkaline a liquid is, was introduced by the Danish chemist Søren Sørensen in 1909 while he worked at the Carlsberg brewery’s laboratory. What the p stands for is still argued over; power and potential are the usual guesses.
